Transgender Athlete Ban
Louisiana passed legislation in 2022 restricting transgender girls and women from participating in girls’ sports in public schools and universities. Similar policies remain the subject of ongoing national legal and cultural debate.
2023
"Don't Say Gay" Law
Louisiana enacted legislation restricting classroom discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in K–12 public education, often referred to in advocacy contexts as a “Don’t Say Gay” law. Implementation and interpretation continue to vary and remain part of ongoing public and legal debate.
Gender-Affirming Care for Minors
Louisiana passed legislation restricting access to certain gender-affirming medical care for individuals under 18. The law has faced legal challenges and may be subject to court rulings affecting enforcement. Adults remain eligible for gender-affirming healthcare.

Access to Facilities and School Policies
Louisiana enacted legislation affecting access to restrooms, changing rooms, and sleeping quarters in certain public and charter school settings and other state-regulated facilities. The law defines access based on sex assigned at birth and allows for civil complaints in cases of violation. Portions of this policy remain subject to legal interpretation and potential conflict with federal protections such as Title IX.

Name and Pronoun Policies in Schools
Legislation places restrictions on how public and charter school employees may use names and pronouns that differ from official records. School policies recognizing chosen names or gender identity may be limited under this framework, and implementation can vary by district and administrative guidance.

U.S. House Policy on Facility Access
Under Speaker Mike Johnson, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted internal rules in 2024 restricting restroom access for transgender women in House-controlled facilities. These rules apply to congressional spaces and are not federal statutes.
