FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

P.A.C.E. announces the Shreveport Premiere of Outrage: Emmy-nominated documentary film about the conspiracy that protects closeted gay politicians who support anti-gay legislation; panel discussion to follow with a participant in the film.

Shreveport, LA - May 2, 2012

The Emmy-nominated 2009 documentary film Outrage its Shreveport premiere on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at minicine?, 846 Texas Ave.  Doors will open at 7pm with the film beginning at 7:30pm followed by a panel discussion that will include a participant in the film.  This event is free and open to the public.  Donations will be accepted in support of the work of P.A.C.E., Northwest Louisiana's leading advocacy organization that advocates for a just society in which the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community can lead open, honest, responsible, and safe lives at home and in the workplace.

The film's website describes Outrage as a "searching indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians with appalling gay rights voting records who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to.  Boldly reaving the hidden lives of some of the United States' most powerful policymakers, Outrage takes a comprehensive look at the harm they've inflicted on millions of Americans, and examines the media's complicity in keeping their secrets." The New York Times say "Outrage promises to illuminate a 'brilliant conspiracy' that protects the secret lives of some powerful politicians while ensuring that the rights and interests of ordinary gay and lesbian Americans remains marginal... [It] offers a lot of insight into the ideology and psychology of present-day political homophobia."

Politicians in Outrage alleged to be closeted gays voting against gay rights include former local U.S. Congressman (1988-2009) Jim McCrery, former U.S. Senator Larry Craig of Idaho, former Governor Charlie Christ of Florida, former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, and U.S. Congressman David Dreier of California.  Politicians interviewed in Outrage who have acknowledged being gay include Jim Kolbe, former U.s. Congressman from Arizona, and James McGreevy, former Governor of New Jersey.

The panel discussion following the screening of Outrage will include two former members of ACT-UP Shreveport and one of former Rep. McCrery's accusers.

Reviewers have described Outrage as:

  • "CALM, RIVETING AND PROVOCATIVE." - Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer
  • "Quiet and powerful." A.O. Scott, NY Times
  • "DECIDEDLY UNSENSATIONAL, CAREFULLY ORGANIZED AND REMARKABLY ENTERTAINING." - Cindy Fuchs, Philadelphia City Paper
